Southeast England - Kent Golf Guide
Testament to the quality of the golf courses in Kent, the county has over the years hosted 17 British Open Championships, the first in 1894 at Royal St George’s, marking the first time that the Major had been played outside Scotland.
Recognized as one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments, The Open Championship has since returned to Royal St George’s 13 times (most recently in 2011 when Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke won) whilst Royal Cinque Ports staged the global event in 1909 and 1920 and nearby Prince’s hosted it in 1932. Indeed numerous other major amateur and professional tournaments have been hosted by courses around the county, testament to the high quality of the golf courses.
By contrast inland Kent with its rich, rolling countryside and abundant orchards is the perfect backdrop to its heathland and parkland courses. The verdant land throughout the Weald of Kent ensures stunning views from the golf courses whilst the undulating terrain makes the layouts a strong test of golf.
